Remember when we were in college? And one day you rode your bike all the way across campus to my dorm. You knocked on my door and when I opened you simply said, “What should we do today?”
I looked back at my dorm room and said, “I want to get a pet fish for my desk.”
So we rode to the pet store a few miles away. We laughed the entire way there. When we stopped you chained your bike to mine and held my hand in the parking lot. We picked out a Beta fish. You told me I wouldn’t be able to keep any other fish alive.
When we walled back out to our bikes I told you we had to walk back because I didn’t want Steve to go belly up from the bumpy bike ride. You took him and put him in your basket. You promised me to ride slow with him.
It took us 2 hours to get back. We rode side by side and talked about our past.
Its funny, even then we had a past together. It felt like we’d known each other a century. We were only friends then. But there was always something more under the surface. I’ve always loved you.
And now that we have known each other a century, I’m just as in love with you today as I was that day that we got Steve. When Steve did go belly up, I cried a little. I called you and you came right over.
He was just a fish. But you held me anyway. You always do.
